Fast Devotionals

January 15, 2017 – Next Generations

Scripture

He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; Psalm 78:5-7 (ESV)

Observation

Not only were the commandments important to God’s people, the Israelites, but it was necessary that it be passed down to their children and the generations to come. In teaching their children the Word of God, they ensured the posterity of faith for the coming generations. We read that this is actually a command to God’s people so as to end the dangerous cycle of rebellion versus repentance because a generation was allowed to forget the faithfulness of their Lord.

Application

I understand the weighty responsibility of instilling Biblical values in my home and my own life, but I also value the opportunity to declare the things of God to the children of others. If my ministry is only to my husband and my daughter, the effectiveness of my witness will only go so far. This is the reason that I’ve jumped at opportunities to teach children and youth about God’s love and truth. By pouring into the next generations, I empower them to be agents of change and carriers of truth. Who are the generations that you are making an impact on because you have chosen to share God’s Word with them? It’s never too late to share what you know with the littlest people in the Kingdom of God.

Prayer

Dear God, my prayer is that as I continue to work out faith in my own life and keep a vibrant and growing relationship with you, that I would pour just as much time and effort into making sure the next generation of children and youth are taught the truths of your Word. You commanded it in your Word. May I live it out in my service to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

January 14, 2017 – Global Impact

Scripture

“And you must LOVE the Lord your God with ALL your HEART, ALL your SOUL, ALL your MIND, and ALL your STRENGTH.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

Observation

The greatest way to impact our world and make an impact on people centers on this scripture: loving God and loving others. It starts with us and our own relationship with the Lord. God wants us to love Him with everything we’ve got and in every way: heart, soul, mind, and strength. But God doesn’t just want us to love Him, but to love our neighbor as well – the people that live next to you, your co-workers, people in your school, and more. He wants us to reach out and connect, so that we might be a light for Jesus. God wants to use us for His purposes and to reach and bless others.

Application

Love God with all that you’ve got! Communicate your love. Be creative in loving the Lord. How can you give God all your love? Is your heart right? How’s your spirit? Are you giving Him your full attention and devotion? Let’s not be lazy or passive. Let’s initiate and be passionate and give Him our all! Engage with the “neighbors” and get to know them. You can’t love them if you don’t know them. Bring cookies over, find out what they do, bless them in small ways, and love them where they’re at. Reach out your hand and shake a hand. Open the door for a relationship to start to grow, and see what God does.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for today’s Word and your love for me. I pray that as I spend time with you, that you would reset my heart, mind and spirit to love, to help and to serve you. Help me to be a great neighbor to the people around me and to be light for others in Christ. Help me to not be passive, but be passionate for what you are passionate about. Help me to make a difference in my world so that others will be inspired in their world. Lead me today for your glory and your Kingdom!

January 13, 2017 – Missionaries

Scripture

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Mark 16:15 (NLT)

Observation

Jesus told us to go out to all the nations and preach the Good News. We can share the same Good News in our own community in which we live.

Application

I think of the many mission teams that Inspire Church has sent out to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. There have been missions to Thailand, Nepal, Japan, Uganda, Guatemala, Peru, Vanuatu, Tonga and other nations. Many Christians are being called to go on these mission trips to share about Jesus but I have never gone on a mission trip myself. I sense my calling is to share in my own sphere of influence, in my community. We all come in contact with others in a day and those encounters can be our opportunity to share and invite others to church. My mission field is my community and I will continue to reach out to others that may not have heard about Jesus and offer them the opportunity to come to church and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Lord, give me an opportunity today to share with someone my testimony and share the Good News of Jesus. May I have boldness as I leave the house today, to share and offer people the free gift of eternal life, through Jesus. Use me today on a mission journey in my community.

January 12, 2017 – Commission/Gospel

Scripture

“Then Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched, he said to him, “Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the lord swore to their ancestors he would give them. You are the one who will divide it among them as their grants of land. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8

Observation

In this moment Joshua was commissioned by Moses to take the people of Israel into the promised land. Moses has already told the people that he will not be taking them himself and all of this is now on Joshua’s shoulders. In front of all of the people of Israel, Moses encourages Joshua and reassures him of all God has promised.

Application

When faced with a commission like Joshua’s, fear can make us hesitant to step out and walk in that commission. In this passage, Moses answers all of the questions we have when we have fear about being sent. Why do I need to go first? (You’re not going first. God has already gone ahead of you.) Why do I need to go alone? (You’re not going alone. God will be with you.) What if I fail? (God will not fail you.) What if I get lost? (God will not abandon you.) If we can remember that God has already answered all of our doubts, walking in our commission is about participating in what God is already doing rather than trying to accomplish something on our own.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for having a plan and purpose for me. Thank you for giving me all that I need to fulfill the potential you’ve given me. Help me to be strong and courageous and to step out in faith when You are leading me. When the task seems large, remind me that You are larger and that You have already seen where this path will take me. I surrender my fear to You and walk confidently into Your plan for my life knowing one day I will enter the promised land you have set forth for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

January 11, 2017 – Global Crisis

Scripture

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NLT

Observation

ALL authority has been given to Jesus. Make disciples of ALL the nations. Baptize them. Teach them to observe all Jesus’ commands. Jesus is with us until the end.

Application

We live in a lost world. The world needs a savior. In the midst of the Global Crisis and planetary unrest, Jesus the Savior is still the answer. By the authority given to us as believers, the world’s hope lies in us. The true global crisis is that too many people are living and dying without knowing Jesus and the depth of His love. What if they knew how good His work was on the cross and that all their questions of life are answered in Him. The joy for us who believe is that there is so much work yet to be done and many opportunities lie around every corner in our homes, our communities, our states, our country, and around the world.

Prayer

Thank you Lord Jesus that I am alive in a time of so much chaos, unrest, and dysfunction in the world. The global crisis we are facing makes the need for your love even greater. Thank you that you are using me to share the Good News with those I know and that you are calling many believers to the nations of the world. Thank you that many will come to know you as Lord and savior. I declare and proclaim that many who choose you will choose to work in the Harvest of these precious end days. In the name of above all names, that name that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess, the name of Jesus our Lord – Amen!!!

January 10, 2017 – Pastors/Spiritual Leaders

Scripture

I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you. But if it were me, I would encourage you. I would try to take away your grief. Job 16:4 – 5 NLT

Observation

Job was enduring a barrage of insults from his three closest friends. THREE CLOSEST FRIENDS. In a time of craziness, where he needed encouragement, his friends were slinging insults, and putting his character into question. His response could have been hateful, but it wasn’t. He responded with grace. He championed encouragement. He extended an olive branch of hope. Many times we are given the opportunity to respond. We can criticize and slander, or we can show grace, and encourage someone in what could be a low part of their life. The key is having the discernment and self-control to do so.

Application

When I read this, it was so convicting. Sometimes I can be quick to react, when I should take a step back, and show grace. Even if the reaction is justified, I have to make sure that I am using discernment and self-control. I have to bring life by encouraging.

Prayer

Father, use me to encourage others, especially my pastors and leaders as they pastor and shepherd us. Use me as a vessel to show love and grace to all.

January 9, 2017 – Local Community

Scripture

Our bodies have many parts, but these parts don’t all do the same thing. In the same way, even though we are individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other. God in his kindness gave each of us different gifts. Romans 12:4-6a God’s Word Transaltion

Observation

As a new president takes office in our country, we are reminded that although important, government will never fulfill all of our needs. We were designed to operate together in community to provide for the whole! The strength of our nation is determined not by our president, but by the strength of our communities and the individuals who comprise them. Like the body, our community functions best when the individuals residing there work together. Our community needs us to be active inside of it for it to function at its peak capacity. God gave us something specific to bring to the table. If we choose not to be active in our community, we are choosing to withhold one of God’s gifts from the body while simultaneously depriving ourselves of hundreds and thousands of gifts that other members of the Body of Christ have been given to share with us!

Application

Put your faith in Jesus today by connecting with His body. Connecting with the body of Christ means connecting with other believers. Initiate a new relationship with someone from your church today, or reach out to that someone you’ve been telling yourself you want to know better. Like putting the hand near the wrist, God has probably placed that member of the body near you so you can function better together than apart!

Prayer

Thank you Father God for the gifts you have given me. Please help me to steward those gifts and share them with your body. Lord I pray that you help me meet someone new today, a member of your body that you wish me to connect with, and I pray that you help us function together to bring more honor and glory to you Father! In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen!

January 8, 2017 – 20/20 Vision

Scripture

“That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭NLT

Observation

God wants to show us things that are beyond our dreams- things that we can’t even imagine. The question is, “Do we dare to dream big dreams?” We see other people living out their dreams, but say to ourselves, “I wish I could do that.” Because of the sabatoging thoughts and the things we say to ourselves, we ensnare ourselves from ever pursuing that God given potential.

Application

How can we live out the dreams that God has placed in our hearts? Ask and reflect on these questions… 1. What precisely is that dream that God is placing on my heart? 2. What is getting in the way of my dream becoming a reality in my life? 3. Who could I talk to, where could I go to get more information and mentorship to start on that dream? 4. What am I willing to give up and sacrifice in order for me to obtain that God sized dream? 5. What 3 habits do I need to do daily to start?

Prayer

Lord, please forgive me for not believing that the dreams and purposes that you have placed in my heart can really come to pass. Give me the grace, wisdom, and strength to do what you have called me to do. In Jesus’ name!

January 7, 2017 – Government

Scripture

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. (Romans 13:1 NLT)

Observation

I think it is pretty interesting that Paul is telling the followers of God to submit to the government during a time when they were probably getting abused by that same government. He doesn’t tell us to submit and honor authorities just for honor’s sake. Paul goes to the heart of honoring authority… we must honor because it is God who put them in that specific position. So in actuality, when we honor them, we are truly honoring God.

Application

We probably encounter an authority figure each day. Sometimes they are good encounters, sometimes they’re not so good (ex. traffic ticket). What would it look like if we began to see these people while remembering that God gave them the position. Let us begin to see people in the government as God’s elected people and let us continue to lift them up in prayer.

Prayer

Jesus, we thank you for all that you do! Today we lift up our government officials that you placed over us. Lord I pray that you continue to give them wisdom and understanding. I also ask that if they do not know you yet that they will soon have a relationship with you as a personal Savior and Lord. Amen!

January 6, 2017 – Unity

Scripture

I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:10 NLT

Observation

The apostle Paul is speaking the to the church of Corinth about unity because he heard about the disarray of the church. You can sense Paul’s firmness and authority in this passage when he appeals to them and follows up by stating that it’s by the authority of God. Paul understood that as Christians, we should be on the same page, having one heart, and speaking the same language when it comes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Application

Years ago I remember meeting with a new couple at Starbucks. They both had just given their lives to Christ the weekend before and had so many questions. After our meeting, a lady on the other table approached and said she overheard our conversation and had a few questions. I answered, based on scripture. As she departed, she said that the answers I gave were the same as she had previously heard from other Christians she talked to. I thought about this for a moment. I hope and pray this is always true because our source is the same. It’s Gods word.

Prayer

Father, I thank you for daily opportunities to show unity in the body of Christ. I thank you for your word that not only gives life but holds all things together. It gives us clarity and unifies us. I pray all that who follow you press in closer, seeking your will and plans for their lives. I pray these things in your son’s precious name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

January 5, 2016 – Health

Scripture

Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. Psalm 91:7-11 (NLT)

Observation

The scripture describes great calamity occurring very near (10,000 are dying around you) but I will only be an observer from afar (these evils will not touch you). I decided to choose to stay near God. Not only does the scripture say I will be protected from harm, but God has also put angels over me to keep me safe.

Application

Because God is taking care of us by keeping us safe and healthy, we should focus our energies on what He is calling us to do instead of focusing on fear.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for our new focus for our lives in this new year. May it be more of what you want us to do in our lives and for others. May we always choose to stay close to you and your protection.

January 4, 2017 – Relationship

SCRIPTURE

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22

OBSERVATION

God has given us the greatest purification: Love! Love comes from God dwelling in our hearts. In order for us to have a sincere relationship with Christ and people, our hearts must first be scrubbed with love. Love allows us to deepen our relationships because we desire something greater than us.

APPLICATION

Know the condition of your heart. Are my relationships enriched with deep Love?

-Share your heart

-Truth allows us to deeply Love

-Think of others as greater than yourself

-To Love, we must know we are Loved

PRAYER

Lord God, I thank you for your love, and that you first loved me. I ask that you examine and scrub my heart today and bring revelation to areas in my life where I can love deeper. Forgive me if I have not loved deeply. Bring back people in my life for whom I have lacked deep love. Allow my love to be genuine and true, filled with your grace and mercy. Allow me to see others as greater than me, so my heart is always in check. I thank you for your word and truth today. I look forward to the greater love! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!

January 3, 2017 – Freedom

Scripture

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Gal 5:13-14 (NLT)

Observation

Paul was validating the freedom that the Galatians had in Christ and that it was God’s calling. A calling is not something that is taken lightly but something that is a way of life, for taking responsibility for something. In this case, the Galatians needed to take responsibility for their freedom. They were called to freedom so that they could love and serve each other rather than fulfill the desires of their own flesh. He quotes Jesus by saying the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus said in Matthew that he did not come to get rid of the law but to fulfill it. Paul wanted the Galatians to see that though they were free of the law, they were still responsible for their freedom and the reason that Jesus fulfilled the law.

Application

As Christians we are commanded to love one another, not to pursue our own fleshly desires. As Paul says, “We are called to live in freedom.” Freedom means that we are NOT required to love and serve, but that we GET to love and serve. When we understand our calling and take responsibility to live in freedom, we quickly find that we have the desire to love and serve the people around us. Although Jesus came to fulfill the law, he raised the standard of the way we are to live our lives. The standard is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the kind of love that draws people to Jesus! Three ways to take responsibility for your freedom:1. Evaluate your freedom – How are you loving others? – Are you putting yourself before others (Phil 2:3)? 2. Are you serving? -If not, what is stopping you? -If so, how is your heart attitude? 3. Live in your freedom -Make freedom a daily habit.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray that you would show me how to live in your freedom. Show me how to love others better and search my heart for attitudes and selfish ambitions that hinder my freedom. Expose my selfish desires so that I can bring them to you. Today I declare to live in your freedom and to make freedom my daily habit! Amen.

January 2, 2017 – Provision

Scripture

Philippians 4:17-19 (NLT); I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness. 18 At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Observation

Paul is recognizing and thanking the believers of the Church of Philippi for their generosity. He is grateful that all of his needs have been abundantly met, through them. Paul’s encouragement, the reward he wants the believers to recognize, is twofold. First, God not only sees their generosity, but He is also pleased by it. Second, faith-inspired generosity results in an outpouring of generosity from God. If they sow generously, they will also reap generously from the abundance that God has; all their needs will be met. Being a blessing produces the benefit of being blessed. They can not outgive the Father.

Application

Interestingly, Paul refers to needs being met, not wants being fulfilled. I used to be motivated to fulfill my wants, holding on to the things that were supposed to make me feel significant and important. Ironically, a fulfilled want always produced a greater want. What I needed most of all was a savior and God generously provided for that need through Jesus Christ. As I a continue to submit myself to the Lordship of Jesus, I discover two things. My wants are decreased because I am satisfied with the needs He fulfills, and when I release what I once held tightly, there is a sense of contentment which dispels the desire for more.

Prayer

Father, thank you for fulfilling my greatest need through your Son Jesus Christ! Your generosity has overwhelmed me. Help me to remain aligned to You, trusting that you will fulfill my needs. Reveal to me opportunities to be a blessing to others so that I will remain satisfied with all that you graciously provide. Amen
